Humboldt County has an opportunity to increase citizen involvement in local government according the recent Civil Liberties Show on KMUD.
The City of Arcata is leading the pack by using a system called Granicus which live streams City Council meetings along side the meeting agenda. The agenda is complete with links to staff reports on individual items. (Click image to biggify.)
Supervisor Clif Clendenen is supportive of bringing similar technology to county meetings, according to Access Humboldt Executive Director Sean McLaughlin.
But host Bonnie Blackberry said the county isn’t paying enough attention to the possibilities. She noted the challenges of Southern Humboldt residents to participate in meetings that affect them, like Planning Commission meetings. Some residents have to travel 2-3 hours one way to attend such meetings, she said.
Blackberry and guests talked about the possibilities of using Skype or other technology that would allow people to participate via computer. One idea is to have a place in (for example) Garberville where SoHum folks can both watch and comment during meetings. Ultimately, people would be able to participate from home “in their underwear.”
Jan Kraepelien, who works magic for both Access Humboldt and the City of Arcata said it would cost between $10,000 – $20,000 for the county to set up the Granicus system. The system cuts down on staff time by making so much information available online.
Supervisors meetings are currently streamed on the web, but Planning Commission meetings are not. Both are shown live and repeated on Channel 10 — which is inaccessible to the far reaches of Southern Humboldt. Yet any hill dweller with satellite internet could stay well informed on Arcata issues.
The door’s open,” said Blackberry. “We just have to walk through it.”
Eureka City Council meetings are also shown live on cable access, but the sound quality is wretched. Perhaps they should look to Arcata.
Listen to the show in the KMUD archives. Scroll down to Wednesday May 6 @ 7pm.
The Civil Liberties Monitoring Project will host a clarification meeting to address misconceptions about the General Plan Update (like those on display at the last Planning Commission meeting) on May 22 at the Vets Hall in Garberville.
Hello Yellow Diarists:
I leave this Yellow ‘Post it’ on our Communal Corkboard to let you know I’m travelling out of Toronto to Vermont for a retreat which will be led by my friend Laura Simms. This is my week off chemo and I’m running for the hills. Laura is an entrancing professional story teller and humanitarian and has the eyes of a Devi. I will blog from Vermont. I have drafts.
Now I only have time for a short espresso blog. Ristretto?
I’m off steroids and I need to sleep. I forgot that’s what the night is for.
Just returned from my friend Joshua Bell’s concert in Toronto tonight feeling many things at once. Spilled veins. Heart tips. Tiny wings alive on the surface. Music opens the door of feeling in me. I used to spend hours listening to Wong Kar Wai soundtracks. There’s a line in ‘In the Mood for Love’: ‘at least she was always the heroine of her story’. Yup, that was me.
Then came Goldfrapp.
Tonight was surrender to a violin. If you have seen one of Joshua’s concerts you will know what I mean. If not, see him perform. I will not try to explain. I am overjoyed we have this in the world: art, music, FOOD, transcendence of words, time, logic…

Kismat Konnection
Yesterday, on the IAC earnings conference call, CEO Barry Diller said that he’d be open to selling Ask.com. The media took off with the comments as if they were new and a deal was imminent. It’s not.
A source familiar with the matter said there are currently no talks about an Ask.com acquisition or spinoff. Diller’s comments were made in response to constant questions that IAC receives regarding their willingness to sell Ask.com. Their response has always been the same.
So why did everyone run with Diller’s comments as if they were new? The “buzz” is probably more of a reaction to the recent Microsoft-Yahoo! deal plus the fact that IAC has, in fact, sold or spun off a bunch of companies in recent years. It’s kind of what Barry Diller does.
Actually, Ask.com is a cash cow for IAC. This is something that often gets lost in the “search wars.” The conversation is always framed about stealing search share from Google. But you don’t have to have a ton of search share to be profitable.
If Diller is going to sell, it’s going to need to be a sweet deal to make up for losing one of IAC’s top three revenue-generators. Google probably has too much antitrust scrutiny right now. Microsoft has cash to burn, and it wouldn’t be the first time speculation has been made about Microsoft buying Ask. Plus, in case you didn’t notice, Bing imitated a lot of what we saw in Ask 3D. You have to think that adding 4% search market share all at once has crossed Steve Ballmer’s mind. It would be a nice cherry on top of the deal struck with Yahoo!
So, yes, there’s a likelihood that Ask.com will probably be sold at some point, but there’s always been that chance.
